Radio Origins
Before the official towel, before the novels, the vinyl LP records or the TV version, there was the original 1978 series on BBC Radio 4.
Douglas Adams and producer Geoffrey Perkins (who sadly died in 2008) remember the ground-breaking radio series of The Hitchhiker’s Guide and how none of them really knew what they were doing, as they created a modern classic with the aid of synthesizers and steam hammers. In an archive interview from 1981, Douglas discusses with original cast members Simon (Arthur Dent) Jones and Mark (Zaphod) Wing-Davey the nature of radio scriptwriting and why it ought be far better paid.
