Douglas Adams, author and creator of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy explains the story behind a rare piece of licensed merchandise from 1985; the official towel.

As noted in the pages of the original 1979 novel, towels have massive significance to all galactic hitchhikers, and a variety of uses to which they may be put. However, at the time of this archive interview, in May 1985, Douglas had just recently returned from abroad where he’d discovered a previously undocumented purpose; ice-walking!
